On Valentines Day, we spend so much time thinking about love. We think about who we love, how we love them, who loves us and how they show their love to us (that’s a lot of love in one sentence). On a day like Valentine’s Day when our whole country is focused on what it means to love, it’s important to remember the origins of love.
Love comes from a loving Father and Savior who, because of His great love for us sent His one and only son Jesus to die a horrible death on the cross, taking on all of the sins of the world. Then, three days later that loving Father raised Jesus from the dead to show his power over death and to give us hope in a hopeless world. It is through this Father and Savior that we learn what true love is and how to show love to the world around us.
1 John 4:16b-19 (NIV)
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. WE LOVE BECAUSE HE FIRST LOVED US.
